Constants are tough to define. The Boston experimental rock 3-piece blur genre boundaries, playing a highly refined style of heavy yet melodic space rock, utilizing understated progressive structures, emotive vocals, and a finely tuned sonic signature. In describing the band, critics commonly resort to referring to “their particular brand of spacey indie/alt/metal/rock/whatever…” (MetalSucks, 9/16/10), and this conundrum has become something of an emblem for Constants.
Justin K Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu/Pale Sketcher) produced Constants’ latest record, If Tomorrow The War, released September 2010 on Science of Silence and Radar Recordings. Broadrick’s heavy-ambient style makes If Tomorrow… an incredible sounding record, and also fits perfectly with the already-hard-to-define manner that Constants embody. Further confusing things, the album features guest appearances by Andrew Neufeld (of Comeback Kid / Sights & Sounds) and Mike Hill (of Tombs). All together, If Tomorrow The War is the best representation of the band to date, something heavy, lush, catchy, energetic, rough, and a bit dirty.
