VICE’s Noisey reps Diamond Terrifier HARD, Preview New <>T Tape SHRINE FLU
You may know Sam Hillmer as the bearded saxophonist for the famed downtown avant-weird chamber punks Zs. He’s also the director of Representing NYC, a not-for-profit music series that pairs young Brooklyn hip-hop artists with indie luminaries like Excepter’s Zebrablood, Mr. Lif, and Prefuse 73.
Hillmer’s been kicking around a new solo project called Diamond Terrifier, named for the nine-faced, thirty-four-handed, sixteen-legged Buddhist deity Vajrabhairava. He’s working on a late-year LP for Northern Spy Records, but this March he’s dropping a cassette on Words+Dreams. It’s a 22-minute droned-out sax-and-outmoded-electronics masterpiece. According to Hillmer, “SHRINE FLU is the part of the Venn diagram representing our collective psyche where spiritual paranoia & materialism overlap with political and economic paranoia and materialism.” Good shit.
We’ve got an exclusive stream of the title track below, and if you’re in NYC you can catch Hillmer’s PRACTICE! series at Zeubulon on January 31, a free show featuring Parts & Labor’s Dan Friel, Rat Attack, and GDFX, the electronic psych project from the virtuosic ex-Liturgy drummer Greg Fox. I went last week and it was off the chain.

Planned since Hubble’s first live performance in September of 2010, Hubble Drums is an inspired record of new guitar music. Equal parts shred-fi, cyber-dread and fried psychedelia, Hubble Drums marks Ben Greenberg (of Zs and Pygmy Shrews)’s first full-length recording and debut for Northern Spy. Recorded at Python Patrol and lovingly mastered at Bonati Mastering, the CD and 150g LP features original artwork by Michael Yaniro and Ben Greenberg.

Hipster Puppy events, limited cassettes, Zs, Spy Music Fest
Hold on tight, the following post may make the internet completely collapse upon itself. Christopher Weingarten, notorious blogger/tweeter (as 1000TimesYes) and ex-drummer of Parts & Labor, welcomed his latest book Hipster Puppies over the summer. In celebration, Weingarten is throwing two upcoming events. The first is a (rescheduled due to hurricane Irene) “Hipster Puppies instore” at Sound Fix Records this Saturday (9/10). “Bring a dog, get a dollar off a book.” Chris will be DJing. Flyer below.
The second, more my style, is a release party on September 21st at Public Assembly with live musical appearances from Zs, Burning Star Core, Mountains, and Dinowalrus, all of which appear on the Hipster Puppies: New York Cassette which is also celebrating its release that night. Limited to 350 copies, this 87-minute tape is available for purchase or for free to the first 50 people to buy tickets. Tickets are on sale now.

The piece New Slaves was two years in the making, it served as both the center piece to the record bearing it’s name and the overarching five year continuance of Zs, and it is with much compassion that we mark the piece’s final pass into the quietus. Last rites were performed via the collaborative remix project Essence Implosion! which was issued earlier this year. Today we give notice of the commencement of a three step funeral march with the release of THIS BODY WILL BE A CORPSE (in play button form via Parte), SKY BURIAL (in cassette form via Words Plus Dreams) & “33″ (in 2×7″ form via Northern Spy).
As New Slaves passes into the ether, Zs have begun scoring the followup ex novo and, though we are suiting up for that battle starting right now, it will be a couple of years before their work is fully realized. In the interim, brooklyn based avant-garde label Northern Spy have stepped in to work with the band’s numerous extraneous projects including Ben Greenberg’s Hubble, Ian Antonio’s Memory Locke, Sam Hillmer’s Black Crown Ceremony, as well as a boxed set reissue of the bands earlier sextet releases. This new working relationship will be celebrated with the aforementioned funeral step “33″ to be released in early November alongside the Hubble debut full-length “Hubble Drums”.
Also cued up for release is the release of Sam Hillmer’s Diamond Terrifier cassette, Himalayan Appalachia via Sockets: four compositions of solo acoustic & effected saxophone madness which was coincidentally recorded by TSR label founder Rich Zerbo. This will see release on September 17th, release party festivities will commence the same night at Death By Audio with a number of musicians including label mates NYMPH.
We will do our best to keep you apprised of all these Zs related-developments with utmost excitement while the band enters this parturient state leading up to their next TSR full length.

Zs and Pygmy Shrews guitarist Ben Greenberg has broken free from the tethers of his bands to anxiously float above our atmosphere with his solo project as Hubble. Greenberg’s brand of ambient, sci-fi psychedelia— dubbed “cyber-dread”— creatively stretches the limits of conventional guitar technique, tone, and composition in a way that showcases the instrument’s formidable capability to fly solo.
Zs to release double 7-inch “33”
The double 7-inch release comes as the first in a series of objects to be pumped out by ESP-escape hatch Northern Spy on the behest of the band. Look out for more 7-inches, as well as “solo releases, box sets and more.”
